How much RAM does a Rust server need?

RustUpdated Oct 5, 20262 min read

The game server install is about 5.8 GB on disk, so choose a plan with room for it. A larger World Size uses more memory and disk.

Check your own usage

Open your server's Overview page and look at Usage, then the RAM tab, while players are online. An empty server tells you little, so read it with players on. See How to read your server's usage graphs.

Tips for a healthier server

  • Keep World Size modest for a small player group; 3000 is the default and a bigger map takes longer to generate and uses more memory and disk.
  • Carbon only enables the hooks that loaded plugins actually need, whereas Oxide fires all of them, so Carbon adds less overhead on heavily modded servers.
  • Leave Save Interval at a sensible value; the default is 60 seconds.

Change plan

If memory keeps reaching your plan's limit while players are on, move to a bigger plan. See How to change your plan or billing cycle.
