Your map comes from two numbers: World Size and World Seed. Leave the seed empty and your server gets the same default map as every other server without a seed, so set your own number. Change them as part of a wipe, because a new size or seed means a new, empty map.
The three settings
Open Settings, then Game Settings.
- World Size: from 1000 to 6000, 3000 by default. A bigger map takes longer to generate and uses more memory and disk.
- World Seed: a number from 1 to 2147483647. Empty by default. 0 is not a seed.
- Level:
Procedural Map(the usual choice, built from the size and the seed) orCraggyIsland, Facepunch's small fixed map. A Custom Map URL, when set, is loaded instead: How to use a custom map on your Rust server.

Find a seed you like
A size and a seed always make the same map. Websites such as RustMaps let you preview a map for a given size and seed. Pick one, then type both numbers into the panel. Use the same size you preview.
Change the map the safe way
The easiest way to get a new seed is the Wipe page, because it sets the seed and clears the old map in one step.
- Back up first. See How to back up and restore your Rust world.
- If you want a different World Size, change it in Game Settings now.
- Open Wipe in the left menu, choose Map wipe in step 1, and in step 2, The next map, choose Use this seed and type your number. Or choose Generate a new random seed.
- Click Wipe now, type
mapand click Wipe this server. - Start the server when you are ready. The new map takes a few minutes to generate.
The full steps and the other wipes are in How to wipe your Rust server.
What if I only change the numbers in Game Settings
The server starts a new world on the next start, and players spawn on an empty map. The old map and save files stay on disk until you wipe them. So change the numbers as part of a wipe, and back up first.
See which seed you have now
The Wipe page shows Current seed under The next map. If it says the server has no seed set, you are on the default map that every server without a seed gets.
Good to know
- Keeping the same seed with Keep this seed brings back the same world, empty. Choose it if your community knows the map.
- With a Custom Map URL set, the seed decides nothing, and Generate a new random seed and Use this seed on the Wipe page are switched off.
- To change the size and seed at every wipe, scheduled ones included, list your maps in a map rotation: How to set up a map rotation on your Rust server.
- The live map needs a fixed seed: How to use the live map on your Rust server.
- Players who played the old map see a new one after the wipe, so announce it. The ready-made schedules do this for you: How to set up automatic wipes on your Rust server.
