Rust server.cfg Generator
Set team size, PvE, decay, upkeep, browser tags and events, then copy a ready server.cfg and start line. Free, no sign-up, works on any host.
36 settings; every server.cfg default read from a live Rust server on 7 November 2026 (protocol 2636.290.1).
Start from a preset, then change anything:
This generator needs JavaScript. Every setting, its default and what it does is listed in the tables further down this page.
How to use it on any Rust server
- Stop the server.
- Put the first tab in
server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg, where <identity> is the value ofserver.identity. Create the cfg folder if it is missing. The game never writes to this file. - Use the second tab as your start line, or copy the settings you need into the one you have.
- Start the server. The game reads server.cfg at start, and a value in server.cfg wins over the same setting on the start line.
How to use it on PlayNHost
- Tick For a PlayNHost server above. The panel sets the name, description, website, images, max players, save interval, world size, seed, ports and RCON on the start line, so the generator leaves them out of server.cfg: a server.cfg line would quietly beat the panel.
- Easiest: open your server in the Game Panel, click Settings, then Server Settings (server.cfg) under Config files. Tags, PvE, team size, radiation, global chat, instant crafting, decay, upkeep, stability, idle kick and the frame rate limit are there with the same names.
- For the other lines, stop the server, open
server/rust/cfg/server.cfgin Files, paste the lines, save and start. Your own lines are kept when the panel saves the file.

Run your Rust server on PlayNHost
Instant setup, DDoS protection, automatic backups and a 72-hour money-back guarantee. Tags, PvE, team size, decay and more are in the panel's server.cfg editor.

For server.cfg settings the default is the value the game reported on our test server when the setting was not set. Start line settings, the server name and the player limit show the value this page starts with, as noted.

Questions
Where is server.cfg on a Rust server?
In server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg inside the server folder, where the identity is the value of server.identity on the start line. On PlayNHost it is server/rust/cfg/server.cfg.
Does server.cfg override the start line?
Yes. Facepunch says the server reads server.cfg at startup and that it takes priority over anything set on the command line. Keep ports and RCON on the start line and the rest in server.cfg, and never set the same thing in both.
How do I write a setting in server.cfg?
One per line: the setting name, a space and the value, with no + in front. Put text with spaces in double quotes, for example server.hostname "My Server".
How do I make my Rust server solo, duo or trio?
Set relationshipmanager.maxteamsize to 1, 2 or 3. The Solo / duo and Trio presets at the top do this.
How do I set 2x gather rates in Rust?
Vanilla Rust has no gather rate setting. Install a plugin such as GatherManager with Oxide or Carbon and set the rate in its config file.
Good to know
- Defaults measured on a real server. We started a Rust server (protocol 2636.290.1, build of 7 November 2026) and asked it for every setting over RCON. The server.cfg defaults on this page are the values it answered with, so they match the current game, not an old list. The start line, server name and player limit have no game default to show: set them yourself.
- Tested with this page's file. We then started the same server with a server.cfg made on this page and read every value back over RCON: the server took each line.
- Gather rates are not a vanilla setting. 2x or 3x gather, stack sizes and loot multipliers need a plugin such as GatherManager on Oxide or Carbon. See How to stop plugins stacking rates.
- Tags. The browser shows up to four tags. Pick at most one from each of wipe schedule, difficulty and region; game mode tags can be combined. Turning on PvE adds the PvE tag by itself. Source: Facepunch's server browser tags page.
- Find any other setting with
findin the server console, for examplefind decay, as Facepunch's Creating a server page suggests.
