Frequently
Asked

Questions

What people ask before they host a Hermes Agent. The knowledgebase has the longer answers.

How long does the first start take?
About three to four minutes: the first start installs Hermes Agent with Nous Research's own installer. Later starts took 27 to 67 seconds in our tests, update check included.
How do I find my Telegram user ID?
Send your bot any message before you set it: your Telegram user ID appears in the console, and the agent still answers nobody until you add the ID on the Agent page.
Does Hermes Agent update itself?
Yes. Each start checks for a new stable release and installs it first. If the update fails, the version you already have starts as before.
Is this official Hermes Agent hosting?
No. We run the open-source Hermes Agent, installed with Nous Research's own installer; PlayNHost is not affiliated with Nous Research.
How much does a Hermes Agent server cost at PlayNHost?
Hermes Agent plans start at US$5.49 (€4.99) a month with 2 GB RAM, up to US$17.99 (€15.49) with 8 GB RAM. That is the regular monthly price, before any first-month discount, and every plan includes DDoS protection, SFTP and 24/7 support.
What do you get with a Hermes Agent server at PlayNHost?
A Hermes Agent server at PlayNHost comes with: Telegram and Discord; Your Own AI Key; Only You Can Message It; Newest Stable Release at Every Start. You choose the region when you order (Europe, North America, South America, Asia or Australia), and setup starts as soon as payment clears.

What you get

A server that runs Hermes Agent for you around the clock. You bring an API key from your AI provider and a Telegram or Discord bot token; the panel stores them encrypted and starts Hermes Agent with them. You then talk to your agent from Telegram or Discord, and it keeps its memory, skills and scheduled jobs running while your computer is off. Your AI provider bills your model use directly; our plan covers the server.

PlayNHost is not affiliated with Nous Research. Hermes Agent is open-source software under the MIT licence, and its docs say it collects no telemetry.

How much memory Hermes Agent needs

Hermes Agent is light once it runs, but installing and updating it is not. We measured version 0.23.0 on our own servers, on one CPU core, before selling it:

2 GB limit1 GB limit
First installDone in about 150 seconds, at most 1,277 MB in useStopped for lack of memory after 562 seconds
Update from 0.22.7 to 0.23.0Done in 93 seconds, at most 1,412 MB in useStopped for lack of memory
Running with Telegram and Discord223 to 259 MBAbout 200 MB

That is why our plans start at 2 GB, although the agent needs far less once it runs. The install takes about 2.5 GB of disk, 3 GB after an update; the 2 GB plan has 12 GB.

Which AI providers you can use

Paste a key from any one of these on the Agent page: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, xAI or OpenRouter. One key is enough: Hermes Agent picks the provider from the key, and you can change the model from the chat with its /model command. Keys are stored encrypted, never shown again, and reach only your server. In our tests Hermes Agent kept only a fingerprint of the key in its files. Your provider bills your model use directly; our plan covers the server, not the AI.

Who can talk to your agent

Hermes Agent can run commands and send messages for you, so it answers only you. On the Agent page you enter your Telegram user ID or your Discord user ID, and messages from anyone else are ignored. Do not know your Telegram ID? Send your bot any message: your Telegram user ID appears in the console. Your agent has no port open to the internet; it connects out to Telegram and Discord on its own. If a setting opens it to other people while it runs, the server stops the agent, and the next start lets only you in again.

What it does not include yet

  • A web dashboard. Hermes Agent's own docs say its password sign-in is not for the public internet, so we do not open it. You use Hermes Agent from Telegram or Discord.
  • Other chat apps. Telegram and Discord only. WhatsApp is not allowed: Hermes Agent's WhatsApp bridge imitates WhatsApp Web, which breaks WhatsApp's terms. Slack, Signal, Matrix and the other apps are switched off.
  • Browser automation. Hermes Agent is installed without its browser, so tasks that need it to drive a real browser will not work.

Do I need Docker or a VPS?

No. Hermes Agent's official Docker image starts as root under its own process manager, and on a VPS you install and update it yourself. Here the server already runs it: the first start installs Hermes Agent with Nous Research's installer, which takes about three to four minutes, every later start checks for a new stable release, and an in-chat restart or update starts it again on its own. You get a console, files and SFTP if you want to look inside, and backups keep your agent's settings, memories, skills, sessions and scheduled jobs (about 5 MB in our test).
