To kick or ban a player who is online, open the ... menu on their row on the Active players card on Overview, or in the Players list of the Live map, and choose Kick or Ban. The same card adds and removes owners and moderators with Admins, and lifts bans with Bans.
See who is online
The card lists everyone who is on, with how long they have been connected. See How to see who is online on your Rust server.

Add or remove owners and moderators
- On the Active players card, click Admins. The window Owners and moderators opens.
- Next to Add as, choose Owner or Moderator.
- To add someone who is online, click Add as Owner or Add as Moderator next to their name under Online now. To add someone who is not online, type their SteamID64 in Add by SteamID64, a name in Name (optional) if you like, and click the button.
- To take rights away, click Remove on their row under Owners and moderators.
A name can use letters, numbers, spaces and the characters _ . - only. A SteamID64 has 17 digits and starts with 7656119.
It works whether the server is running or stopped:
- Running: the change applies at once. A player who is online has to leave and join again to get the new rights.
- Stopped: the change is written to
server/rust/cfg/users.cfgand read at the next start.
Owners can use every admin command in the game, and moderators can kick, ban and use most of them. To give yourself admin, see How to become admin on your Rust server.
Unban a player
Click Bans on the same card. The window lists the bans and has an Unban button on each row. The steps are in How to unban a player on your Rust server.
Kick or ban a player
The player must be online and the server running.
- On the Active players card on Overview, find the player. Or open Live map in the left menu and find them in the Players list: How to use the live map on your Rust server.
- Click ... at the end of their row. The menu has Copy name, Kick and Ban.

Choose Kick or Ban. A window opens with the server's name:
- Kick player:
Kick <name> from this server? They can rejoin straight away. - Ban player: the game bans their player ID, and you can lift it under Bans while the server is running.
- Kick player:
- Click Kick or Ban in the window. A message confirms it, and the player is removed from the server.

A kick lasts until the player connects again. A ban is permanent: the panel bans the player's SteamID64, so a new name does not get them back in. Lift it with Bans: How to unban a player on your Rust server. The Activity log records each kick and ban with the name, and the ban's entry shows the ID.
If two players on the server have exactly the same name, the panel cannot tell which one you mean and says so. Use the Console for that player, as below.
Kick or ban with commands
You can also type the commands in the Console tab, with the player's SteamID64. Type users first to see who is connected and their IDs.
- To kick: type
kickand a space, then the SteamID64 and a reason in quotes, for examplekick 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "Reason". - To ban: type
banidand a space, then the SteamID64, the name in quotes and a reason in quotes, for examplebanid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "Name" "Reason". Rust writes the ban toserver/rust/cfg/bans.cfgand kicks the player if they are online.
Typed commands let you choose the reason, and banid also bans someone who is not online. Admins can type these commands in the game with F1 too. See How to use the Console and commands on your Rust server.
Who can do this
Kick and Ban in the row menu, the Live map and the Console need the console permission. The Admins and Bans buttons need the console permission and the file permissions to read contents and create files, because they read and write the cfg files. See How to let a friend help run your Rust server.
