How to become admin on your Rust server

RustUpdated Oct 5, 20262 min read
  1. Open Settings, then Game Settings, and make sure RCON Password is filled in. The server will not start without it.
  2. Start the server and join it once with your Steam account, then run users in the panel Console tab to see your SteamID64 (or take it from your Steam profile).
  3. In the panel Console tab run: ownerid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "YourName" (your own SteamID64 and name). The wiki says the change is saved automatically.
  4. Alternatively stop the server, open server/rust/cfg/users.cfg in Files and add the line ownerid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "YourName" "" with your own SteamID64 and name, then start the server again.

Useful admin commands

CommandWhat it does
usersLists connected players with their SteamIDs.
ownerid <SteamID64> "<PlayerName>"Gives that player owner (full admin) rights.
moderatorid <SteamID64> "<PlayerName>"Gives that player moderator rights.

The users, ownerid and moderatorid commands can be typed in the panel Console tab, which sends them straight to the Rust server console. Once you are an owner you can also type them in the in-game console (F1). Remote admin tools connect over RCON with the RCON Password. See How to use the console and run commands.

Good to know

  • Only give admin rights to people you trust.
