How to let a friend help run your Rust server

RustUpdated Oct 21, 20264 min read

Invite your friend from Team & Roles, and give them a role with the permissions for what they should do. Playing on the server needs only the address. Running it in the panel needs a role.

Invite someone

  1. Open your server in the panel and click Team & Roles in the left menu. On a desktop you can also use Invite people at the end of the tab row.
  2. Click Invite someone, enter their email address, choose a role and send the invitation.

The steps and the built-in roles are in How to invite friends and give them access.

Which permission a Rust task needs

On the Roles tab you tick permissions in areas such as Control, Files, Backups, Settings and Schedules. For your Rust server:

TaskPermissions it needs
Use the Console, send commandsControl, Use the console
Kick and Ban in a player's row menu, and the Live mapControl, Use the console
Restart the server, or Restart and update nowControl, Restart
Admins and Bans on the Active players cardUse the console, plus Files: Read contents and Create and upload
The Wipe pageFiles: Delete
Change the Map rotation on the Wipe pageFiles: Delete, plus Settings: Change startup
Back up first on the Wipe page, and Start backupBackups: Create
Choose the modding framework, change Game SettingsSettings: Change startup
Open the Modding tab and see the plugins listAny Files permission, for example Browse files
Install or update a pluginFiles: Create and upload
Uninstall a pluginFiles: Delete
Add or edit wipe schedulesSchedules
Edit slotsSettings: Rename server

If a button is missing for your friend, the role does not have the permission for it. Wiping and deleting files are risky: give those only to people you trust.

Make someone admin in the game

A panel role is not the same as being admin in the game. To make a friend an owner or moderator in the game, use Admins on the Active players card: How to become admin on your Rust server.

Good to know

  • You can require two-factor for everyone you invite, on Team & Roles.
  • To remove access, open Team & Roles and remove the person.
  • To see who did what, use Activity: How to see what happened on your server.
