Vintage Story server settings: every option explained

Vintage StoryUpdated Oct 5, 20265 min read

These are the options on the Settings, Game Settings page of a PlayNHost Vintage Story server, taken from the panel's own definitions. Rows marked read only are set by your plan or the server and cannot be changed.

All settings

SettingWhat it doesAllowedDefault
Start optionsExtra command-line options passed to the server at startup. Leave empty unless support has asked you to set one - nearly everything configurable lives in serverconfig.json instead, which you can edit in the File Manager.up to 200 charactersempty
Release branchWhich release channel to install from: stable (the tested public release, recommended), unstable (newest builds, may break mods) or pre (pre-release candidates). Changing it can make an existing world impossible to load, so make a panel backup first and ask support to change it for you. Do not use Edit Server Type for this, because it deletes the server's files by default.one of: stable, unstable, prestable
Release versionThe exact Vintage Story version to install, for example 1.19.8. Leave it as latest to take the newest build on the branch you chose. Pin a specific version when you are running mods that have not been updated yet. Changing it can make an existing world impossible to load, so make a panel backup first and ask support to change it for you.up to 20 characterslatest
Auto-update serverCheck for a new Vintage Story build each time the server starts. This takes patch releases only, for example 1.22.6 to 1.22.7, and never a new minor version such as 1.22 to 1.23, because mods name the minor version they support and the game disables the ones that do not match. To move to a new minor version, open a ticket: it needs a reinstall done by support, so download a backup of your world first. Your world and Mods folder are never touched by the automatic patch updates.on or offon
ModDB modsMods to install from mods.vintagestory.at, comma separated, named by the last part of the mod's address or its numeric id. Example: primitivesurvival, shapeprojector. Each is resolved to the newest release built for the game version this server runs and downloaded while the server installs, so changing this list applies when support installs the server again, not on a restart. Zips you upload into data/Mods yourself are never touched by this.lowercase letters and numbers only, separated by commas, up to 512 characters (a capital letter is refused)empty
Max Clients (read only)The player limit included with your plan. This field is read-only. To run with fewer players, click Players on your server Overview page and pick any number up to your plan limit (this restarts your server). Upgrading your plan raises the limit itself.set by your plan or the server16

Good to know

  • Release branch, Release version and Auto-update server are read when the server starts or is installed. Changes to Release branch, Release version or ModDB mods may only apply when the server is installed again, which is done by support: do not use Edit Server Type for this, because it deletes the server's files, including the world, by default. Other settings such as server name, join password, PvP, whitelist mode and the default role for new players are in data/serverconfig.json in Files. Stop the server before editing that file and start it again afterwards so the changes are picked up. The player limit and port in that file are managed for you.
  • The panel saves a value when you leave its field. If the value is not allowed, the panel tells you and keeps the old one.
