How to set player roles on your Vintage Story server

Vintage StoryUpdated Oct 30, 20264 min read

To give a player a role on a Vintage Story server hosted on PlayNHost, type /player PlayerName role rolename in the Console while the server is Online, for example /player Alex role sumod for a survival moderator. The role decides what the player may do. New players get the role suplayer (survival player) unless you change the default.

How do I give a player a role?

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Console tab. The badge must say Online.
  2. Type /player PlayerName role rolename, with the player's exact name and a role code from the table below.
  3. Press Enter. The Console shows the game's answer.

To see a player's current role, type /player PlayerName role without a role code.

You can also type these commands in the in-game chat once you are admin: How to become admin on your Vintage Story server.

Which roles does Vintage Story have?

These are the nine roles of a default Vintage Story server, as the official server configuration guide describes them:

Role codeNameWhat the player can do
suvisitorSurvival VisitorVisit and chat, but not use, place or break anything.
crvisitorCreative VisitorVisit, chat and fly, but not use, place or break anything.
limitedsuplayerLimited Survival PlayerBuild only in areas they are allowed to, manage player groups, chat.
limitedcrplayerLimited Creative PlayerAs above, plus fly and set their own game mode.
suplayerSurvival PlayerBuild in unprotected areas, manage player groups, chat. The default for new players.
crplayerCreative PlayerBuild in all areas, fly and set their own game mode.
sumodSurvival ModeratorBuild everywhere, kick and ban players.
crmodCreative ModeratorAs a survival moderator, plus fly and set game modes.
adminAdminEvery privilege, including giving other players admin.

How do I change the role new players get?

The role new players get is the DefaultRoleCode line in serverconfig.json, set to suplayer on a new server. It is not in the panel's serverconfig.json card, and the official dedicated server guide says there is no command to set it, so change it in Files:

  1. Stop the server on the Console tab and wait for the badge to say Offline.
  2. Click the Files tab, open the data folder and click serverconfig.json.
  3. Find the line that starts with "DefaultRoleCode": "suplayer" and replace suplayer with another role code, for example suvisitor so new players can only look around until you promote them.
  4. Save the file and start the server.

To change the role of a player who has already joined, use /player PlayerName role rolename; the guide says this works while they are online or offline, with no restart. For editing files in the panel, see How to upload, edit and manage your server files.

Is a role the same as panel access?

No. A role is what a player may do inside the game. Panel access, under Team & Roles in the left menu, decides who may start the server, open the Console or edit files: How to invite friends and give them access. Anyone who can use the Console can run every game command, so only give Console access to people you trust.
