Most problems with a Vintage Story server come down to a few causes. Start with the one that matches what you see.
You cannot connect, with a version mismatch message
Why: Your game version differs from the server's version.
Fix: Install the same game version on your PC, or ask support to move the server to your version after you make a panel backup. Check the server's Release version setting for what it runs.
Mods stopped working after the server updated
Why: Mods only support certain minor versions, and a new minor version disables them.
Fix: The server only takes patch updates automatically. If the version or branch was changed, ask support to set it back to a version your mods support, after you make a panel backup.
The server does not appear in the public server list
Why: Public listing is off by default and this is normal for private servers.
Fix: Add the server by hand in Multiplayer using the Server Address.
Players cannot join even with the right address
Why: A join password or whitelist is turned on in data/serverconfig.json.
Fix: Give players the password, or have an administrator add them with /player playername whitelist on, or check the whitelist mode in data/serverconfig.json.
A change in the server config file did not stick
Why: The file was edited while the server was running, so the server's own copy took over.
Fix: Stop the server, edit data/serverconfig.json, then start the server.
Seed or world size in the config file has no effect
Why: These only apply when a new world is created.
Fix: Set them before the first start of a new world. For an existing world they cannot be changed.
My uploaded world is not loaded
Why: The file is not named default.vcdbs and the world file path was not updated.
Fix: Rename it to default.vcdbs, or set the world file path in data/serverconfig.json to your file, then restart.
