How to upload your own Rust world

RustUpdated Oct 5, 20264 min read

You can bring a Rust world you already have, from your own computer or another host, to your PlayNHost server.

Back up first. Uploading a world with the same name as the one on the server replaces it. Create a backup of the current world (see How to create, download and restore backups), stop the server, and keep your own original files until the server loads the new world.

Upload and load your world

  1. Create a backup first. Both options below replace or abandon your current world.
  2. Custom map: upload your .map file to a public site that gives a direct download link (a link that starts the download by itself), then paste that link into Custom Map URL and restart. The server stops using its current world, which stays on disk until you wipe. Players download the map from that link, so it must stay online.
  3. Existing save: stop the server, then upload the map and save files into server/rust keeping their original names. Files with the same names as the current ones replace the current world. Set World Size and World Seed to the numbers in the file name, then start the server.
  4. Saves only load on the Rust build they were made for; after a forced wipe a renamed old save is not a safe way around the wipe.

Large files are best uploaded with SFTP. See How to connect to your server files with SFTP and How to upload, edit and manage your server files.

Start a fresh world

Starting fresh can permanently remove the current world. Back it up first.

  1. A wipe permanently deletes files and cannot be undone. Create a backup first.
  2. Open Wipe in the sidebar and choose the option you want: a map wipe, a map and blueprint wipe, or a full wipe. The page lists the exact files each option removes. A map wipe removes the map and the saves, options that include blueprints remove every player's blueprints, and a full wipe also clears player records such as clans. Plugin data in oxide/data is never removed by a wipe. Type the scope shown to confirm; the server is stopped cleanly before files are removed.
  3. On the same screen choose a new random seed or enter your own number. Keeping the same seed regenerates the identical map.
  4. Start the server; a new map is generated on first start, which can take a few minutes on a large world size.
  5. For a monthly wipe on Rust's forced wipe day (first Thursday), the panel offers scheduled wipe templates under Schedules that are switched off by default.

See How to back up and restore your Rust world.
