How to become admin on your Project Zomboid server and use admin commands

Project ZomboidUpdated Oct 5, 20263 min read
  1. Open Settings, then Game Settings. Set Admin Username and an Admin Password of your own (6 to 32 characters, no quotes or backslashes), then restart the server. Do this before the first start: changing the password later may not change the account that already exists.
  2. In the game's Join screen, log in with exactly that username and password. On a brand new server this account is the administrator.
  3. To make another player an admin, open the panel Console tab and type: setaccesslevel "username" "admin" (no slash). In game chat, an admin types it with the slash: /setaccesslevel "username" "admin".

Useful admin commands

CommandWhat it does
setaccesslevel "username" "admin"Sets a player's access level. Levels from highest to lowest are admin, moderator, overseer, gm, observer.

servermsg "text"Broadcasts a message to everyone online.
kickuser "username"Kicks a player.
banuser "username"Bans a player.

In game chat, admins type commands with a slash in front. In the panel Console tab, type the same command without the slash. Remote admin tools also take commands without the slash. See How to use the console and run commands.
