How to add mods to your Terraria server

TerrariaUpdated Oct 5, 20263 min read

The standard Terraria server runs the base game only and has no mod support. Add-ons are available on the TShock server type, which adds server-side plugins, accounts, permissions and anti-grief. Players join with a normal, unmodded Terraria game.

Back up first. See How to back up and restore your Terraria world.

Add a mod

  1. Create a backup of your world first. On the TShock type the world file is your World Name with .wld on the end in the main server folder, not in saves/Worlds, so your existing world is not found there automatically.
  2. Change your server type to TShock. Changing server type can delete the server's files, so take the backup first, or ask support if you are unsure.
  3. Stop the server, open Files, upload the plugin's .dll file (and any extra library files it lists) into the ServerPlugins folder, then start the server.
  4. Make sure the plugin was built for the TShock version your server runs, otherwise it will not load. Check the Console tab for the plugin loading.

Where files go

Open Files and use these places:

  • ServerPlugins (inside Files, TShock server type only)

Check it worked

Once the server has restarted, read the Console. A mod that loaded shows up during startup, and problems show under Errors and Warnings. See How to use the console and run commands and How to add mods, plugins and modpacks.

If the server stops after you add a mod, remove the newest mod or restore your backup. See How to fix a server that will not start.
