How to upload your own mods to your tModLoader server

TerrariaUpdated Oct 24, 20263 min read

For a mod that is not on the Steam Workshop, upload its .tmod file to the mods folder in Files, add its name to mods/enabled.json, and restart. Mods on the Workshop are easier to add on the Workshop page, which also keeps them updated: How to add Steam Workshop mods to your tModLoader server.

Upload and switch it on

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open the Files tab and open the mods folder.
  3. Click Upload and choose the .tmod file, for example MyMod.tmod.
  4. Open enabled.json in the same folder. It is a list of mod names in quotes, for example:
[
  "CalamityMod",
  "MyMod"
]
  1. Add your mod's name, which is the file name without .tmod, in quotes, with a comma between entries. Save the file.
  2. Start the server.

The panel keeps the names you add by hand: at every start it adds the Workshop mods to enabled.json and leaves your own entries as they are.

Check it loaded

Type modlist in the Console. Your mod should be in the list. If it is not, read the Console from the start for an error that names it: A tModLoader mod did not load on your server.

Good to know

  • Players must have the same mod. The server offers its mods when players connect.
  • A mod built for an older tModLoader may not load on the version the server runs.
  • To switch the mod off, take its name out of enabled.json, or delete the .tmod file, and restart.
