How to add Steam Workshop mods to your tModLoader server

TerrariaUpdated Oct 24, 20264 min read

On a tModLoader server, open the Workshop page, paste a mod's Steam Workshop link or number, or a whole collection, and click Add. Add the mods it needs with Add all, click Save, then Restart to apply. At every start the server downloads the mods and switches them on, and players get the same mods when they join.

Your server must be on the tModLoader type first: How to switch your Terraria server to TShock or tModLoader.

Add a mod

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Workshop tab.
  2. In the Workshop mods card, paste the mod's Steam Workshop address, or the number at the end of it, into Paste a Steam Workshop address or id, or a collection, and click Add. Or click Browse, search the Workshop and click Add on a mod.
  1. The mod appears in the list with its name and picture, checked against Steam.
  2. Many mods need other mods, often a library. If one is missing, the card says A required mod is missing or N required mods are missing, and the mod's row says Needs and the names. Click Add all, or Add on the row.
  1. Click Save. Until you do, the card says Not saved yet. and Discard throws the changes away.
  2. The page says Saved, and not applied yet. Click Restart to apply, or restart later.

What happens at the next start

The Console shows lines that start with [pnh-mods]: Updating and the number of Workshop items, then Workshop: N ready, N failed. Enabled: and the mod names. The first start after a change downloads the new mods, which can take a few minutes for big ones. Then tModLoader loads them and the server starts.

To check what loaded, type modlist in the Console.

Collections

A Steam Workshop collection works too: paste its address like a mod, and the server downloads every mod in it. A collection can hold mods and the libraries they need, so you keep one list on Steam. The server remembers what a collection holds for a day, so a mod you add to the collection on Steam reaches the server at a restart within a day. Up to 200 Workshop items are downloaded.

What players need

Players start tModLoader on Steam, which is free, and join with the IP and port as usual. They are offered the server's mods when they connect. See How to join your Terraria server.

Who can change the list

The Workshop page needs the Change startup permission. See How to let a friend help run your Terraria server.
