How to add mods to your Team Fortress 2 server

Team Fortress 2Updated Oct 5, 20263 min read

Team Fortress 2 add-ons are mostly Metamod:Source with SourceMod, which runs community plugins (compiled .smx files) for admin tools, game modes and extra features. Custom maps are the other common addition.

Back up first. See How to back up and restore your Team Fortress 2 world.

Add a mod

  1. Turn on Install SourceMod under Settings, then Game Settings, and ask support to apply it. This needs a reinstall, which deletes the server's files by default, including your configs and plugins. Download a backup of the tf folder first, then put your files back afterwards.
  2. Upload each plugin's .smx file to tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins in Files. Plugins in that folder load automatically when SourceMod starts.
  3. Restart the server, or run sm plugins load followed by the plugin name over RCON, then run sm plugins list to confirm it loaded.
  4. To disable a plugin, move its .smx file into tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled.
  5. Plugin settings files are kept in the SourceMod configs folder, tf/addons/sourcemod/configs.
  6. To add a custom map, upload its .bsp file to tf/maps in Files. A map with the same file name replaces the existing one. The map name must be 20 characters or fewer, using letters, numbers and underscores, because that is all Default Map accepts, so a longer name cannot be selected.
  7. To make the map part of the rotation, add its name (without .bsp) to tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, creating the file if it is missing. To start on it, set Default Map to the map name and restart. Players who do not have a custom map must download it when they join, which can be slow or refused.

Where files go

Open Files and use these places:

  • tf/addons/sourcemod
  • tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins
  • tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled
  • tf/addons/sourcemod/configs
  • tf/maps

Check it worked

Once the server has restarted, read the Console. A mod that loaded shows up during startup, and problems show under Errors and Warnings. See How to use the console and run commands and How to add mods, plugins and modpacks.

If the server stops after you add a mod, remove the newest mod or restore your backup. See How to fix a server that will not start.
