Very little. DDNet is a small, efficient server: on a PlayNHost test server, DDNet used about 30 MB of RAM and well under 1 percent of a CPU core with two players on. Any plan runs it. Players and slots matter more than memory.
What makes it use more
- Players. Each player adds a little. A full server with many players uses more than an empty one, but still far less than most games.
- Maps. Large maps take a moment to load and to send to players who do not have them yet.
- Recorded demos. With Record demos automatically on, the server writes a recording of each map. That takes disk space, not memory, and the panel keeps the recordings under 1 GB. See How to record and download demos on your DDNet server.
Check your own usage
- Open your server's Overview page and find the Usage card.
- Click the RAM tab. Choose Live (30 minutes), Past 6 hours or Past day.
- Look at it while players are on. See How to read your server's usage graphs.
If the server ever needs more memory than its plan gives it, the system stops it, and the Overview shows a card This server ran out of memory with Add more memory and See the usage. On a DDNet server that is very unlikely.
When a bigger plan helps
- More player slots. Your plan sets how many players can join. See How to change player slots on your DDNet server.
- More backups or disk for many maps and demos.
Open My plan in the left menu (owner only) to see bigger plans. See How to change your plan or billing cycle.
If the game feels laggy
Lag on DDNet comes from the network far more often than from the server. Check the player's ping in the game: players far from the region you picked for the server have a higher ping. If every player lags at once, restart the server and tell support what you see: DDNet server problems and fixes.
