A standard Terraria server uses about 570 MB when idle and starts fine on the smallest 2 GB plan. TShock is lighter, about 350 MB when idle.
Our free Game Server RAM Guide shows the memory a Terraria server used in our own measurement.
Check your own usage
Open your server's Overview page and look at Usage, then the RAM tab, while players are online. An empty server tells you little, so read it with players on. See How to read your server's usage graphs.
Tips for a healthier server
- A large world takes longer to generate and uses more disk, so pick the size you really need before the first start.
- NPCStream trades bandwidth for smoother enemy movement. Leave it at 0 unless players report enemies skipping.
- Type save in the Console tab before you back up. The official guide warns a world may not save if the server is killed without a save.
Change plan
If memory keeps reaching your plan's limit while players are on, move to a bigger plan. See How to change your plan or billing cycle.
