How to join your Terraria server

TerrariaUpdated Nov 3, 20264 min read

In Terraria, choose Multiplayer, then Join via IP, enter your server's IP, then its port on the next screen, and the password if you set one. The IP and the port are on the Play with friends card of your server's Overview page. On a tModLoader server, players join through tModLoader instead of plain Terraria.

Find the IP and port

  1. Open your server in the panel. You land on Overview.
  2. If the badge says Offline, click Start and wait until it says Online.
  3. On the Play with friends card, the IP and Port rows have copy buttons. The Password row shows the join password, or None set.

The same address is on the server card as Server Address, written as IP:port.

Join from the game

These are the steps the card shows:

  1. Start Terraria and choose Multiplayer, then Join via IP.
  2. Pick your character, or create one.
  3. Enter the IP, then the port on the next screen.
  4. Enter the password if you set one. The password has to match exactly, capitals included.

On a tModLoader server

Players start tModLoader on Steam, which is free, not plain Terraria, and join the same way. The server offers its mods when they connect. See How to add Steam Workshop mods to your tModLoader server.

On a TShock server

Players join with the normal Terraria game, as above. If you switched on Players must log in, they also log in to a TShock account once in: How to change TShock settings on your Terraria server.

The game version

Everyone needs the same game version as the server. Terraria updates itself through Steam, and your server updates itself at every start while Terraria version is latest, so a restart after a Terraria update keeps them matched. See How to update your Terraria server and hold a version.

If you cannot join

The card's Can’t connect? list names the usual causes:

  • The server is not running. Press Start and wait until it has finished starting.
  • Everyone needs the same game version or branch as the server. Update the game, or change the server’s version.
  • The password has to match exactly, capitals included. Check the Password row.

Each one has a full guide: Players cannot join your Terraria server and Players get a version mismatch on your Terraria server. The card's Ask support button opens a ticket with the right questions already in it.
