- For basic remote admin, set the RCON password under Settings, then Game Settings, and restart, then run commands from an RCON tool. The RCON password gives full control, so keep it private.
- For in-game admin with commands and menus, turn on Install SourceMod under Settings, then Game Settings, and ask support to apply it. This needs a reinstall, which deletes the server's files by default, including your configs and plugins. Download a backup of the tf folder first, then put your files back afterwards.
- After SourceMod is installed, open tf/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini in Files and add a line for yourself in the form "STEAM_0:1:123456789" "z", using your own Steam ID in the STEAM_0:X:Y format (a Steam ID lookup site shows it). The z flag grants every permission.
- Restart the server (or run sm_reloadadmins over RCON) so the change is read.
Useful admin commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
sm_reloadadmins | Reloads the SourceMod admin list after you edit admins_simple.ini. Run over RCON. |
sm_admin | Opens the SourceMod admin menu in the game (SourceMod installed, and you are an admin). |
sm version | Shows the installed SourceMod version, which confirms it loaded. Run over RCON. |
changelevel | Changes the map; add the map name after it. Run over RCON. |
kick | Kicks a player, who can rejoin. Run over RCON. |
status | Shows the map and connected players. Run over RCON. |
The admin list is a file you edit in Files. Server commands (sm_reloadadmins, changelevel, kick, status, sm version) are run over RCON with the RCON password. sm_admin is used in the game by an admin. See How to use the console and run commands.
