Squad uses Steam Workshop mods, which add maps, layers and other content. Servers running mods appear under the Custom servers menu in the game.
Back up first. See How to back up and restore your Squad world.
Add a mod
- Do not use the Download Workshops Items setting on a running server. It only applies when the server files are installed, and installing them again replaces the server files, which erases your Server.cfg changes, admin list, rotation files and any mods you added. If you want that route, ask support.
- To add a mod yourself, find its Workshop ID in the mod's Steam Workshop page address.
- On a PC where you have subscribed to the mod, copy its folder from your Steam library folder under steamapps, workshop, content, 393380. The folder is named after the mod ID.
- Stop the server. In Files open SquadGame, then Plugins (create it if it is missing), then Mods (create it if it is missing), and upload the mod folder there.
- Start the server. On boot it lists the base maps and then the modded maps it found.
- To load a modded layer, use AdminChangeLayer with its layer name or add it to your layer rotation file in the ServerConfig folder.
Where files go
Open Files and use these places:
- SquadGame/Plugins/Mods (inside Files), one folder per mod named after its Workshop ID
- SquadGame/ServerConfig (inside Files) for the layer rotation and excluded layer files
Check it worked
Once the server has restarted, read the Console. A mod that loaded shows up during startup, and problems show under Errors and Warnings. See How to use the console and run commands and How to add mods, plugins and modpacks.
If the server stops after you add a mod, remove the newest mod or restore your backup. See How to fix a server that will not start.
