The Rust players card says No answer from the server

RustUpdated Oct 21, 20263 min read

The Active players card says No answer from the server when the panel cannot reach the server's remote console. That is normal while the server is starting or stopped. If the server is Online and the card still says it, check the RCON password and restart.

When it is normal

The card shows It is not answering on its RCON port. That is normal while it is starting or stopped. Wait until the Console shows Server startup complete. The card fills in at its next refresh, about 20 seconds later.

When the server is online

  1. Open Settings, then Game Settings, and check RCON Password is filled in. If it is empty, the server cannot run: Your Rust server will not start without an RCON password.
  2. If you changed RCON Password recently, restart the server. It only uses the new password after a restart, and until then the panel's password does not match.
  3. Open the Console and look under Errors for lines near the start of the server. A server that crashed shows Offline: start it.
  4. Click Bans or Admins. If the panel says The server refused the RCON password, it is the password in step 2.

What still works

The Bans and Admins buttons read and write the owner, moderator and ban files, so Admins works while the server is stopped, and the Bans list shows. Unbanning needs the server running: How to unban a player on your Rust server.

The Live map talks to the server the same way, so it shows Not answering for the same reasons, and kicking or banning from a row needs the server answering: How to use the live map on your Rust server.

Still stuck

Open a ticket with the last 50 to 100 lines of the Console.
