Switch on PvE in Server Settings (server.cfg) on the Settings tab and click Save & restart. On a PvE server, players cannot hurt each other or each other's bases, and the game adds the PvE tag in the server browser by itself.
Turn PvE on
- Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab.
- In the left card, under Config files, click Server Settings (server.cfg).
- In the Gameplay group, switch PvE on.

- Click Save & restart. The server restarts, so players are disconnected for a short while.
- When the Console shows Server startup complete, the server runs as PvE.
To go back to PvP, switch PvE off and click Save & restart again.
The PvE tag
You do not pick the PvE tag yourself, and the tag picker does not offer it: the game adds it when PvE is on. Pick the other tags that fit, for example your wipe schedule and region: How to set server browser tags and server.cfg options on your Rust server.
Good to know
- PvE is off on a new server.
- The switch is read when the server starts. Save only keeps it for the next start.
- Plugins can change how damage works too. If players still get hurt with PvE on, check your plugins on the Modding tab: How to install and update plugins on your Rust server.
