To become admin on a RimWorld Open World server, type op followed by your username in the panel Console, for example op Alice. The Console prints Player [Alice] has become OP. If you are connected at that moment, log out of the server and back in. An admin can use RimWorld's developer mode on the server and run server commands from Open World's chat.
Make someone admin
- Register your account on the server first: the username must exist. See How to join your RimWorld Open World server.
- In the panel, click the Console tab. The server must be Online.
- Type
opand the username, for exampleop Alice, and press Enter. - The Console prints
Player [Alice] has become OP. If the player is online, the game shows "You have been granted admin privileges". - If the player is online, they log out of the server and back in. Until they do, the server still treats their session as a normal player, so commands from chat do not work yet, and the server can write the old state back to their account.
The username is case sensitive and must be one word: commands split what you type at each space, so a username with a space in it cannot be used in a command. Player [name] was not found means the account does not exist on this server, or the spelling differs.
Since server v1.03 (April 2023), op, deop and ban also work on players who are offline.
To take admin away, type deop and the username. The Console prints Player [Alice] has lost OP and the game shows "You have lost admin privileges". As with op, do it while the player is offline, or have them log in again afterwards.
What can an admin do in the game?
- Developer mode. The Open World wiki describes
opas: "Gives player permission to use developer mode". - Server commands from chat. An admin types a server command with a slash in front in Open World's chat, for example
/kick Bob. The answer comes back in chat from[SERVER], and the panel Console logsAlice just ran /kick Bob. Typing/helpin chat lists the commands.
Give admin only to people you trust: an admin can run every server command from chat, including wipe.
Two things work better in the panel Console than in chat: list and status print their answer in the Console only, and announce and say wait for the next line typed in the Console.
Kick, ban and unban
| Type in the Console | What it does |
|---|---|
kick Bob | Asks Bob's game to save, then disconnects him. He can log in again. Prints Player [Bob] has been kicked. |
ban Bob | Marks the account Bob as banned. It does not disconnect him: if he is online, type kick Bob straight after. Prints Player [Bob] has been banned. |
pardon Bob | Lifts the ban. Prints Player [Bob] has been pardoned. |
list | Shows the players connected now. |
A ban also blocks other accounts that log in from the IP address the banned account last used: the server compares the saved IP of every banned account. The player sees "You are banned from this server". If a player who shares a home connection with a banned player cannot join, that is why: pardon the banned account.
To keep people out before they ever join, use a whitelist instead: How to use a whitelist on your RimWorld Open World server.
Look up a player
Type inspect and a username. The Console lists Username, Settlement, Saved IP, Saved ID, Faction, Event Protected, Admin and Banned for that account. Saved ID is the name of the player's file in the Saves folder.
Reset a forgotten password
Players cannot recover a password themselves. While Bob is offline, type changepass, the username and the new password as one word, in the form changepass Bob <new password>, then send Bob the new password privately. Bob can log in with it straight away.
The Console prints the new password in full, and the server's log file in Logs keeps the line. Anyone you gave Console or file access in Team & Roles can read it.
