Players cannot join your Necesse server

NecesseUpdated Oct 29, 20264 min read

When players cannot join a Necesse server, the most likely cause is a version difference after a Necesse patch: players' games updated through Steam, the server did not. Restart the server so it installs the update, with Steam Auto Update on. Next, check that the server is ready and that the IP address and port are in two separate fields.

Work through the causes

  1. Different versions. Fair Games mark many patches as needing the server to update, such as 1.3.3. The server updates only at a start, and only with Steam Auto Update on, which is how a new server starts. If the switch was turned off, the server stays on its old version: Players cannot join your Necesse server after a game update.
  2. The server is not ready. The badge must say Online and the Console must show Type help for list of commands.. A brand-new world takes longer on its first start.
  3. IP and port mixed up. Necesse wants the part of Server Address before the colon in IP address and the number after it in Port Number. Typing the whole address in one field, or the default port 14159, does not work: How to join your Necesse server.
  4. Wrong password. It must match Server Password under Settings, Game Settings exactly, capitals included: How to set a password on your Necesse server.
  5. The server is full. The Console line Started server using port ... with ... slots shows the limit, and players in the Console lists who is on: How to change player slots on your Necesse server.
  6. The player is banned. Type bans in the Console, and unban with their name to lift it: How to kick, ban and unban players on your Necesse server.
  7. Mods. If the server runs mods that players also need, players without them may be kept out. Check each mod's page: How to add mods to your Necesse server.

Only one player cannot join

  • Ask them to restart Steam so Necesse finishes updating, and to check that they are not on a beta under "Game Versions & Betas" in Necesse's properties in Steam.
  • Ask them to delete the server from their Multiplayer list and add it again with the address you send.
  • Check the ban list with bans.
