How to add mods to your Factorio server

FactorioUpdated Oct 5, 20263 min read

Mods are .zip files from the official Factorio Mod Portal (mods.factorio.com) that add or change content. Scenarios are a separate kind of add-on and run through the Scenario setting.

Back up first. See How to back up and restore your Factorio world.

Add a mod

  1. Option A, the Mods tab: fill in Server Username and Server Token under Settings, then Game Settings, restart, then use the Mods tab to search and install from the Mod Portal.
  2. Option B, uploading: download the mod .zip from mods.factorio.com and upload it, still zipped and not unzipped, into the mods folder under Files.
  3. Make sure the mod supports the server's Factorio version. The Mods tab only offers releases that match the version set in Factorio Version.
  4. Restart the server, then join. Your game will offer to download the same mods from the server.

Where files go

Open Files and use these places:

  • mods

Players need the same mods

Everyone who joins needs the same mods and versions as the server.

Check it worked

Once the server has restarted, read the Console. A mod that loaded shows up during startup, and problems show under Errors and Warnings. See How to use the console and run commands and How to add mods, plugins and modpacks.

If the server stops after you add a mod, remove the newest mod or restore your backup. See How to fix a server that will not start.
