To invite friends to your Vintage Story server on PlayNHost, send them the Server Address from the server's Overview page and, if you set one, the join password. Each friend needs their own Vintage Story game account and adds the server under Multiplayer, Add new server. If the whitelist is on, add each friend to it first.
What do I send my friends?
- Open your server in the panel and click the copy icon next to Server Address on the Overview page.
- Paste the address into your message. Keep the port after the colon.
- If the server has a join password, add it to the message, or share it by voice so it does not sit in a chat log.
- Add the link to How to join your Vintage Story server so your friends know where to paste it in the game.
Do my friends need to own the game?
Yes. Every player needs their own Vintage Story account. The server checks each joining player against the official account server, which Vintage Story describes as checking that the player is "a valid, logged in, registered buyer of the game" (Vintage Story server config). The official site sells Vintage Story for Windows, Mac and Linux, with the same release numbers on all three, so each friend installs the version your server runs and joins with the same address.
How do I keep strangers out?
A new PlayNHost server lets in anyone who has the address. Two ways to make it private:
- A join password. Only players who type it get in: How to set a password on your Vintage Story server.
- The whitelist. Only players you add by name get in: How to turn the whitelist on or off on your Vintage Story server. With the whitelist on, add each friend in the Console with
/player NAME whitelist on, using their exact player name, which they find at the bottom left of the game's main menu. No restart is needed after adding a player.
How do I let a friend help run the server?
Give them access to the panel under Team & Roles in the left menu, and choose what they may do there: How to invite friends and give them access. For rights inside the game, such as kicking players or building everywhere, give them a role: How to set player roles on your Vintage Story server.
How many friends can play at once?
