The Worlds page checks every upload before it touches your server, and refuses a world the game could not load. When it refuses, nothing on the server changes, and the page says That did not work with the reason. Find your message below, fix the file, and upload it again.

That is larger than ..., which no Valheim world is. | You picked the wrong file. Pick the zip of one world folder. |
An older world is two files with the same name. Choose the .fwl and the .db together. | Select both files of an older world at once. |
That is one file of a world. Zip the whole world folder and choose the zip. | Zip the folder, not a file inside it. |
Choose a .zip of the world folder, or the .fwl and .db of an older world. | Pick a .zip (or a .tar.gz downloaded from a server), or the .fwl and .db pair. |
Up to 20 letters, numbers or spaces, without quotes or slashes. | Change World name on this server. |

That world folder is incomplete | One of the four _main files of the last save is missing. Close Valheim on your PC so it finishes saving, then zip the folder again. |
That world is missing ... map pieces (.chunk files) | Zip the whole world folder again, with every file in it. |
That archive has world data but not the world's _main .fwl2 file | Zip the whole world folder again. |
There is no Valheim world in that archive. | The zip holds something else. A 1.0 world is a folder with _main files and .chunk files in it. |
That archive holds ... worlds | Zip one world folder at a time. |
That world was saved by a newer Valheim than this server runs. | Restart the server so it updates, then upload again: How to update your Valheim server and hold a version. |
That .fwl file is from a 1.0 world, which is a folder now. | Zip the world folder and upload the zip instead. |
That .db file is not a Valheim world database | Choose the .db with the same name as the .fwl. |
That zip has a password. | Make the zip again without one. |
That zip was made with a compression the server cannot unpack. | Use your computer's own Compressed (zipped) folder, or 7-Zip set to Deflate. |
That file is not a .zip or .tar.gz the panel can read | Zip your world folder and upload the zip. |
A file in that world is smaller than the archive says: the upload was cut short. | Upload it again. |
That world's _main .fwl2 file cannot be read by the game | The save is damaged. Try a copy from the game's backups on your PC. |
The server does not have enough free disk space to unpack that world. | Free some space, for example old worlds or backups, then try again. |
That archive holds a link ... or ... a file whose path points outside its folder | Make the zip again from the world folder only. |
Valheim will not start a public server whose password is part of the world name. | Choose another world name, or change the password: Valheim server stops at start with a password error. |
A world change is still on its way. | Wait until the change shown at the top of the page has finished. |
Something went wrong on the server side, so the change may not have finished. | Check the Your worlds list, then try again. If it repeats, open a ticket. |
The change took too long and was stopped. | Check the list, then try again. A very large world may go in more easily by SFTP: How to upload your own Valheim world. |
Make a good zip
- Close Valheim on your PC.
- Open
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local. - Right-click the world's folder (not the files inside) and choose Send to, Compressed (zipped) folder.
Then upload: How to upload your own Valheim world.
Still refused?
Open a ticket with the exact message and the size of your zip.
