How to upload your own Valheim world

ValheimUpdated Oct 5, 20263 min read

You can bring a Valheim world you already have, from your own computer or another host, to your PlayNHost server.

Back up first. Uploading a world with the same name as the one on the server replaces it. Create a backup of the current world (see How to create, download and restore backups), stop the server, and keep your own original files until the server loads the new world.

Upload and load your world

  1. Create a backup of your current worlds first. A world on the server with the same name as the one you upload is overwritten.
  2. Stop the server so it does not overwrite your upload.
  3. On your own PC find your world: the game's default Linux save path is ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim and on Windows it is %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim, with local worlds in the worlds_local folder.
  4. Upload your world into .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local/ in Files: for a 1.0 world the whole folder named after it, for an older world the .fwl and .db files for that world.
  5. Open Settings, then Game Settings, and set World Name to exactly the name of the world you uploaded (maximum 20 characters).
  6. Start the server. A world saved before 1.0 is converted to the new save format the first time it loads, and Iron Gate says a backup is made at that point, so keep the original files until you have checked the result.

Large files are best uploaded with SFTP. See How to connect to your server files with SFTP and How to upload, edit and manage your server files.

Start a fresh world

Starting fresh can permanently remove the current world. Back it up first.

  1. Safest: stop the server, create a backup, then change World Name to a new name and start. A new world is generated and the old one stays on disk, so you can switch back by setting the old name again.
  2. To remove the old world completely: create a backup, stop the server first (Valheim writes its save when it stops), then delete the folder named after the world inside worlds_local. This permanently deletes that world and all its progress.
  3. Do not use the panel's Fresh World task for this. It deletes every world on the server, not only the one in World Name, and it cannot be undone.

See How to back up and restore your Valheim world.
