Terraria server settings: every option explained

TerrariaUpdated Oct 5, 20266 min read

These are the options on the Settings, Game Settings page of a PlayNHost Terraria server, taken from the panel's own definitions. Rows marked read only are set by your plan or the server and cannot be changed.

Prefer to build the lines first? The free Terraria serverconfig.txt generator lets you set each option and copy the result.

Terraria versionLeave this on latest and the server keeps itself on the newest Terraria build. Terraria players update through Steam and cannot join a server on an older build. Entering a version number, such as 1.4.4.9 or 1449, pins the server: it stops updating itself and stays on the build it has now. It does not swap the installed build for the one you type, so ask support if you need a specific older version installed. Your world is kept either way. Version numbers are listed at https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Server#Downloads.up to 20 characterslatest
World NameThe name of your world. It is also the world's file name: the server loads saves/Worlds/<name>.wld and, if that file does not exist, creates a new world with that name. Changing the name does not rename your world. The current world stays on disk untouched and comes back if you set the name back. English letters, numbers, spaces and . - _ ' only, 20 characters at most.up to 20 charactersworld
World SizeSize of a new world: 1 = small, 2 = medium, 3 = large. Only used when a world is created, which is the first start or a start with a World Name that has no world yet. It never resizes a world that already exists. A large world takes a few minutes to generate and uses more disk.one of: 1, 2, 31
DifficultyDifficulty of a new world. Only used when a world is created (the first start, or a start with a World Name that has no world yet); it does not change a world that already exists. 0 - classic 1 - expert 2 - master 3 - journeyone of: 0, 1, 2, 30
MOTDThe message players see when they join your server. Plain letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation only: accented letters, emoji, double quotes and backslashes are not supported. Applies on the next start. The console command motd changes it only until the next restart.up to 128 charactersWelcome!
World SeedThe seed for a new world. Leave empty for a random world. Plain letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation only, 20 characters at most. Only used when a world is created (the first start, or a start with a World Name that has no world yet); it does not change an existing world.up to 20 charactersempty
PasswordPassword players must enter to join. Leave empty to run a public server. Plain letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation only, 64 characters at most: accented letters, emoji, double quotes and backslashes are not supported. Applies on the next start. The console command password changes it only until the next restart.textempty
NPCStreamReduces enemies appearing to skip across the screen, at the cost of extra bandwidth. Lower values mean smoother movement and more data sent. 0 turns it off.a number from 0 to 600
Auto-update serverCheck for a new Terraria build each time the server starts. Terraria clients update themselves through Steam and will not join a server on an older build, so leaving this on is what keeps your players able to connect. Worlds and serverconfig.txt are never touched. A pinned version is never updated.on or offon
Max Players (read only)The player limit included with your plan. This field is read-only. To run with fewer players, click Players on your server overview and pick any number up to your plan limit - you can raise it back whenever you like. Upgrading your plan raises the limit itself.set by your plan or the serverset by your plan

Good to know

  • These settings are for the standard Terraria server type; the TShock type shows only Max Players, World Name, World Size and Tshock Version. Settings are applied when the server starts, so restart after changing one. World Size, Difficulty and World Seed only matter for a brand new world. Password and MOTD changed with a console command last only until the next restart, so set them in Settings, then Game Settings, to keep them. These settings are written into the server's settings file at every start, so change them in the panel rather than editing that file.
  • The panel saves a value when you leave its field. If the value is not allowed, the panel tells you and keeps the old one.
  • Passwords and tokens are not listed with a value. Each server starts with one set for you, or with none, as the row says. Set a password before you invite players if you want a private server.
