Outside admin tools such as RustAdmin connect to your Rust server with its address, the RCON Port and the RCON Password, all shown in Game Settings. The panel's own Console does not need them: only tools you run yourself do.
What you need
- Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab, then Game Settings.
- Find RCON Port. It is read only: the panel assigns it.
- Find RCON Password. If it is empty, choose one: letters, numbers, dots, dashes and underscores, up to 64 characters. You can change it at any time.
- Take the server's IP address from the Server Address row on Overview: it is the part before the colon.
Connect
- In your tool, create a new connection. Enter the IP address, the RCON Port and the RCON Password.
- Choose the web or WebSocket RCON type if your tool asks. Rust runs its remote console as a WebSocket, which means a plain address of the form
ws://IP:port/password. - Connect, and type
usersto test it.
Never share the password or post the connection address in public: anyone with the address, port and password can run any command.
Change the RCON password
- Change RCON Password in Game Settings.
- Restart the server so it uses the new one.
- Update the password in your tool.
Rust will not start without an RCON password, so never leave it empty: Your Rust server will not start without an RCON password.
If the password is refused
- Rust closes the connection at once on a wrong password and logs
RCON: IP ... attempted to connect with incorrect password.in the Console. - If you changed the password and did not restart, the server still uses the old one.
- The panel's Active players card, Bans and Admins also use the password. If you change it, restart, or the panel says
The server refused the RCON password. If you changed the RCON password under Settings, restart the server so it uses the new one, then try again.
Good to know
- Staff who only need the panel do not need the RCON password: give them a role instead: How to let a friend help run your Rust server.
- The commands your tool can send are the same as in the Console tab: How to use the Console and commands on your Rust server.
- If your tool cannot connect at all, open a ticket with the tool's name and what it says.
