How to remove a mod from your Project Zomboid server

Project ZomboidUpdated Oct 18, 20263 min read

To remove a mod, take it out of Enabled mods and out of Workshop items on the Workshop tab, save both lists and restart. A mod that only added interface tweaks goes cleanly. A mod that added items, vehicles or other content can leave missing or broken things in a world that already uses it, so back up first and remove one mod at a time.

Steps

  1. Make a backup: How to back up and restore your Project Zomboid world.
  2. Open the Workshop tab.
  3. In Enabled mods, click the remove button at the end of the mod's row (its label reads Remove and the mod's name). If you remove a Workshop item that another listed item needs, Workshop items then warns that a required mod is missing.
  4. In Workshop items, remove the item the same way. Click Save under each list you changed.
  5. Click Restart to apply.
  6. After the start, read Did they load? (last start): How to check that your Project Zomboid mods loaded.

Take it out of one list only

  • Out of Enabled mods only: the mod stays downloaded but is off. The page warns only if Enabled mods is then empty (These two lists do not agree). Use this to switch a mod off for a while without losing its download.
  • Out of Workshop items only: nothing downloads it any more, but it is still switched on and cannot load. Avoid this state.

What a world does without the mod

Items, vehicles and buildings that came from the mod may be missing. Players who carry such items may lose them. If you see errors, or the world will not load, put the mod back, or restore your backup: How to restore your Project Zomboid world from a backup.

Map mods

To take out a map mod, also remove its folder from Map folders. Taking a map out of a world that players have explored can damage it, so back up first: How to add a map mod to your Project Zomboid server.

Players

Players keep the mod in their own game and can remove it. A player who still has it enabled may be refused by a server without it: tell them what changed.
