How to add a live web map to your Minecraft server

MinecraftUpdated Oct 15, 20264 min read

A live web map shows your Minecraft world in a browser, filled in as players explore, and shows who is where. The panel sets one up for you in one click: it picks the right build for your server, gives it a port of its own and writes its settings.

Choose a map

MapWhat it is
BlueMapA 3D map you can fly around. It uses more memory and processor time while it draws. It needs your agreement to a download notice (below).
squaremapA fast, light 2D map seen from above. Needs Paper, Purpur or Folia, or a mod loader (Fabric, Quilt, Forge, NeoForge), and is not offered on Spigot.
DynmapThe classic 2D map, for Minecraft versions it still supports. It is offered only where a build exists for your exact version.

On a plan with less than 4 GB of memory, squaremap is the lighter choice. BlueMap works too and draws more slowly. Only one web map runs at a time.

Set it up

  1. Open your server in the panel and click Ports & Network in the left menu.
  2. On the Add-ons card, find Live web map and click Choose a map.

The Set up a live web map window with BlueMap, squaremap and Dynmap
  3. In the window Set up a live web map, pick a map. The window shows which one is On now. If you pick another, the first is switched off (not deleted) and the new one uses the same port, so the map keeps its address. Click Set up and the map's name.
  4. If you chose BlueMap, tick I agree to BlueMap's download notice. This tells BlueMap that you accept Mojang's EULA, that you own a licence to Minecraft: Java Edition, and that BlueMap may download a Minecraft client file from Mojang's servers, which it needs to draw the map. You can Read Mojang's EULA first. Without it, BlueMap draws nothing. Click Agree and finish.
  5. Follow the row's next step. The panel does not restart your server by itself: use Restart now when it asks. If the row says One step left, start the server once so the map writes its settings, then press Finish set-up.

Open the map

When the row shows Running, click Open map, or Copy the map link to share it. Things to know:

  • Drawing a large world can take hours.
  • The link starts with http, not https, so some browsers ask before opening it.
  • Visitors to the map may be able to type into the game chat. If the row says so, press Finish set-up to turn that off.

To change maps later, click Change map on the row. To remove it, click Switch off, and remove the port it used from the Ports & Network page if you no longer need it.

If it does not work

  • The row says the plan has no free port: remove a port you do not need on the Ports & Network page and try again.
  • The badge says Did not start: read the Console for the error.
  • The map is empty: wait for it to draw, and make sure BlueMap has your agreement.
  • Your server type may not be offered. Vanilla, Sponge, proxies and the hybrid types (Magma, Ketting, Mohist) are not.
