Minecraft server.properties Generator

Change the settings that matter for a Minecraft Java server and copy the lines straight into your server.properties. Every setting says what it does and shows the game's default. Free, nothing to sign up for, works on any host.

How to use these lines

  1. Stop your server. The game rewrites server.properties while it runs and can undo your edits.
  2. Open server.properties in the main folder of your server. If it is not there yet, start the server once and stop it again.
  3. For each line you got here, replace the line with the same name in your file, or add it at the end. Leave server-port, server-ip and query.port alone: your host sets those.
  4. Save the file and start the server.

A setting you do not list keeps its default. If you choose the full file, replace only if you know your host does not set values such as the port in that file.

Hosting with PlayNHost? You do not need the file. Open your server, go to Settings, then Server Properties (Java), and change the same options with switches and menus that cannot take a value the game would reject. Every setting explained.

Questions

Where is the server.properties file?

In the main folder of your Java server, next to the server jar. It is created the first time the server starts.

Why is a setting like PvP missing from my file?

Newer Minecraft versions moved a few options, such as PvP, the Nether and monster spawning, to game rules. Use the gamerule command for those. Tick the box above the list to see the old keys if your version still has them.

Which settings cause the most lag?

View distance and simulation distance. Lowering both is the quickest way to make a busy server smoother. See how to reduce lag on your Minecraft server.
