Enshrouded ports and firewall explained

EnshroudedUpdated Nov 3, 20267 min read

An Enshrouded dedicated server uses one network port, which Keen Games calls the query port (15637 by default). On PlayNHost that port is set up and open for you, and it is the port in your Server Address. Players connect through it without typing it: they search your server's name in the game's server list.

Which ports does an Enshrouded server use?

Keen's Dedicated Server FAQ lists "queryPort": 15637 as the port a server needs, and its configuration sample has no other. Older guides on the web also mention a game port, 15636. The current server does not use it: on PlayNHost the server listens on its query port alone, and players connect through it.

Keen adds that Steam uses its own ports. Those are connections your server makes out to Steam, which it does by itself, so there is nothing to set or open for them.

Keen's FAQ also says the server uses IPv4. The address the panel shows is an IPv4 address.

Why is my Enshrouded port usually not 15637?

Each PlayNHost server gets its own port from the machine it runs on, so many servers can share one IP address. 15637 is Keen's number for a server you run yourself. Before every start, the panel writes your server's own port into enshrouded_server.json as queryPort, so the game always listens on the port the panel shows. Use that number, not 15637 from a guide for home servers.

You cannot change the port. If you edit queryPort in the file, the panel puts its own value back at the next start: Your Enshrouded settings keep changing back.

Where do I find the address and port in the panel?

  1. Open your server in the panel. On the Overview page, find the Server Address row and click the copy icon next to it. The address is written as IP and port, for example 203.0.113.10:25600.
  2. For the full list, click Ports & Network in the left menu. Give this to your players shows the same address with a copy button.
  3. Under All ports, the port with the Primary badge, described as The port players connect to, is the query port. It is the only port your Enshrouded server needs.

Game Settings has no port setting for Enshrouded. The Play with friends card shows the Server name and Password instead of an address, because that is how players join.

How do players connect to an Enshrouded server on PlayNHost?

Players open Play, then Join game, switch on Show dedicated server in the server filter, search your server's name and enter the Server Password when asked. The name is the Server name on the Play with friends card. The full steps are in How to join your Enshrouded server.

The address is only needed for Keen's fallback: adding the server to Steam's favorites. Keen's Favorite Server via IP guide asks for the IP and the query port, separated by a colon. On PlayNHost that is exactly your Server Address, so paste it as it is.

Do I need to open ports on my router or firewall?

No. The machine your Enshrouded server runs on accepts connections from the internet on the ports the panel gives to servers, for both TCP and UDP, and your server's port is one of them. The panel says so under All ports: Every port accepts TCP and UDP. Your players' home routers let outgoing connections through, so they do not open anything either.

Keen's note that the port "can be changed to match your firewall settings" is for a server you run at home. With a hosted server, the firewall is already set up for your port.

Only the ports listed under All ports reach your server from outside. Enshrouded needs no second port, so this changes nothing for a normal server.

Does Enshrouded have an RCON port?

No. Keen's server documentation lists no remote console port, and the panel does not need one: the Active players card reads who is on from the Console. Admins use the Admin password in the game: How to become admin on your Enshrouded server.

Common Enshrouded port problems and fixes

My Enshrouded server is not in the server list

The port is not the cause on PlayNHost, because it is set up for you. Check, in this order:

  • The badge says Online and the Console shows [Session] 'HostOnline' (up)!. A new or restarted server can take a few minutes to show up.
  • Show dedicated server is switched on in the game's server filter.
  • Players search the Server name from Play with friends, not the name at the top of Overview.

If it is still missing, add the server to Steam's favorites with the Server Address: Your Enshrouded server does not show in the server list.

Steam favorites cannot find the server

  • Paste the whole Server Address, IP and port, from Overview. Do not type 15636 or 15637 from a guide: those are Keen's defaults, and your port is the one the panel shows.
  • Copy the address again from the panel if it came from an old message.
  • Check that the server is Online.

The address or port changed after I edited the config file

The panel writes the port, the name, the password and the player limit into enshrouded_server.json before every start. Change the Server Name and Server Password in Game Settings instead. The player limit is changed with the pencil beside Slots on the Overview page, because Max Players in Game Settings is read only. Leave the port alone.

Players disconnect or the server list stays empty for one player

When everyone else can play, the cause is on that player's side. Keen's Network Troubleshooting page suggests clearing Steam's download cache, flushing DNS, trying Google DNS and a wired connection, and says Enshrouded uses only IPv4 for multiplayer. School, work and public networks can also block game ports, so a test on another network helps. See Why is my Enshrouded server lagging.
