Don't Starve Together server problems and fixes

Don't Starve TogetherUpdated Oct 5, 20264 min read

Most problems with a Don't Starve Together server come down to a few causes. Start with the one that matches what you see.

The server will not start and the Console says it needs a Klei server token

Why: Don't Starve Together refuses to load a world without a valid server token, and a token that is wrong or expired stops it the same way.

Fix: Create a token at https://accounts.klei.com/account/game/servers?game=DontStarveTogether for Don't Starve Together, paste the whole token into Server Token under Settings, then Game Settings, and start again. The Console message calls this box Cluster Token and shows a link: ignore both and use the Server Token box. If it still fails, create a new token and paste that.

The server does not show in Browse Games

Why: The server may still be loading, the token may be missing, or you are searching for a name other than the Cluster Name.

Fix: Wait until the server is fully online, check Server Token and Cluster Name in Game Settings, and search again. You can also join by address: press the tilde key (~) in the game and run c_connect with your address and port, and your cluster password as a third item in double quotes if you set one.

Players can join, but cannot enter the caves or get stuck when they climb down

Why: The caves run as a second world on their own port, and that port must be reachable for players to be handed over.

Fix: Open Ports & Network and check that the server has its second port, matching Caves Port in Game Settings. If the caves still fail, open a ticket.

The Cluster Name, Game mode or Max Players I typed into cluster.ini keeps changing back

Why: The panel writes these values into cluster.ini every time the server starts.

Fix: Change them under Settings, then Game Settings, and restart.

Mods do not load, or the server takes very long to start after adding mods

Why: The server downloads the mods on the next start, and the list only accepts digits and commas.

Fix: Let the start finish. Check that Steam Workshop Mods holds only the mod numbers separated by commas, with no names, spaces or links.

Admin commands do nothing in the in-game console

Why: Your Klei User ID is not in adminlist.txt, the file is in the wrong folder, or the console is not in remote mode.

Fix: Check that adminlist.txt sits in DoNotStarveTogether/config/server next to cluster.ini with your KU_ ID on its own line, restart the server, and switch the console to remote mode with Ctrl before running the command.

Players cannot join after a game update

Why: The server is still on an older game build, because Auto-update server is off by default.

Fix: Turn on Auto-update server under Settings, then Game Settings, and restart the server so it updates.

Still stuck?

Open a ticket in the category that fits and include the last 50 to 100 lines of the console. See How to open a support ticket and How to fix a server that will not start.
