How to switch between Valheim worlds on your server

Open Worlds in the left menu and click Switch to this on the world you want. Leave Play it with its own rules (recommended) ticked and click Switch and restart. The world you leave stays on the server, untouched, so you can switch back at any time.

Switch worlds

1. Open your server in the panel and click Worlds in the left menu.
2. On the Your worlds card, find the world. The active one is first and marked Active.
3. Click Switch to this on its row, or choose it from the row's menu.
4. The window Switch to and the world's name opens. It says The world running now stays on the server, untouched.
5. Leave Play it with its own rules (recommended) ticked. It sets every world rule to Keep, so this world is not changed by the rules chosen for the last one.
6. If the server is running, Restart now is ticked: players are disconnected for about a minute. Untick it to switch at the next restart instead.
7. Click Switch and restart, or Switch when you restart later.

A message confirms it: Switched to the world, The server is restarting with it., or that it is the active world from the next start.

When Switch to this is greyed out

• The world is Incomplete: part of its last save is missing, so the game would replace it with a new world. Rewind it to a copy first, or upload it again: How to rewind your Valheim world to an earlier copy.
• Another world change is still running. Wait for it to finish.

If there is no Switch to this button at all, your account does not have the Change startup permission. Ask the server owner.

An older world

A world from before Valheim 1.0 shows Older format, converts on first start. The switch window adds that the game turns it into a 1.0 world the first time it saves it, and keeps the old files as a copy.

The password rule

While Public Server is on, the server password must not be part of the world name. The panel refuses such a switch with Valheim will not start a public server whose password is part of the world name. Choose another world name. See Valheim server stops at start with a password error.

World Name in Game Settings

The Worlds page sets World Name in Settings, Game Settings for you. You can still change it there by hand, but then the world rules are not set to Keep, and a name with no world behind it makes a new world at the next start.
