How to install a Valheim mod on your server

Open the Modding tab, click Browse Thunderstore, find the mod and click Install. The window lists the mod and every mod it needs; click Add to the mod list, then Apply and restart. This works on the Valheim BepInEx and Valheim Plus Mod server types.

Before you start

• Your server type must load mods: How to switch your Valheim server to BepInEx or Valheim Plus.
• Make a backup: How to back up and restore your Valheim world.

Find the mod

1. Open your server in the panel and click the Modding tab. The page is called Mods.
2. Click Browse Thunderstore.
3. Type in Search Thunderstore mods for Valheim, or pick a Category, for example Server-side, Client-side or Deep North Update. Sort offers Most popular, Recently updated, Newest and Top rated.
4. Each result shows its author, downloads, when it was updated and its labels. Look for Updated for Valheim 1.0, and check whether players need it too.

Install it

1. Click Install on the mod. A window Add and the mod's name opens.
2. It works out everything the mod needs and lists each line: Adds with the version, and Needed by for the mods that come along.

3. Read the notes:

   • With crossplay on, a red note warns when a mod would lock console players out.
   • A blue note says when players need some of these mods too.
4. Click Add to the mod list.

A message says the mod was added and It takes effect at the next start: use Apply and restart when you are ready.

Apply it

1. On the side card On this server, State says Changes wait for a restart.
2. Click Apply and restart, or Apply and start if the server is stopped.
3. The Console shows each mod as it is installed, in lines that start with [playnhost] mods:, then the game starts.
4. On Your mods, the mod shows Loaded. See How to check that your Valheim mods loaded.

Players need it too?

If the mod is marked Players need it too, click Share with players on the side card and send your players the code: How to share your Valheim mods with players.

A mod that is not on Thunderstore

You can still upload a mod's files yourself: stop the server, open Files, go to BepInEx/plugins/, and Upload the files. Then start the server. The Mods page does not list files you upload this way and leaves them alone. See How to upload, edit and manage your server files.

If something goes wrong

• The mod shows a reason in red instead of Loaded: Valheim mod did not load on your server.
• Console players can no longer join: Console players cannot join your modded Valheim server.
