How to upload your own Terraria world

TerrariaUpdated Oct 5, 20263 min read

You can bring a Terraria world you already have, from your own computer or another host, to your PlayNHost server.

Back up first. Uploading a world with the same name as the one on the server replaces it. Create a backup of the current world (see How to create, download and restore backups), stop the server, and keep your own original files until the server loads the new world.

Upload and load your world

  1. Create a backup of your current world first (it will be replaced if the file name matches).
  2. Stop the server.
  3. Open Files and go to saves, then Worlds.
  4. Upload your .wld file there. On your own computer, singleplayer worlds are stored in the game's Worlds folder. If a file with the same name is already there, the upload replaces it.
  5. Open Settings, then Game Settings, and set World Name to the file name without the .wld ending, for example myworld for myworld.wld. Keep it to 20 characters of English letters, numbers, spaces and . - _ ' only, so rename the file first if needed.
  6. Start the server. It loads that world instead of creating a new one.

Large files are best uploaded with SFTP. See How to connect to your server files with SFTP and How to upload, edit and manage your server files.

Start a fresh world

Starting fresh can permanently remove the current world. Back it up first.

  1. Create a backup of your current world first.
  2. Open Settings, then Game Settings, and set the World Size, Difficulty and World Seed you want for the new world.
  3. Easiest and safest: change World Name to a name that does not exist yet and restart. A new world is generated and the old one stays on disk untouched.
  4. Or stop the server first, then delete the .wld file for the current World Name in saves/Worlds and start the server again. Deleting the file permanently removes that world and everything built in it, so only do this after a backup.
  5. A new world takes a while to generate on the first start, especially a large one. Wait for it to finish before you try to join.
