Players see "This server expects version" on your Skyrim Together server

Skyrim TogetherUpdated Oct 30, 20265 min read

Skyrim Together Reborn shows "This server expects version ... but you are on version ..." when the mod on the player's PC is a different build from the server. The server only accepts its exact version. Check the server's version with /version in the PlayNHost Console, then bring the player, or the server, to the same build.

What does the message mean?

The full text is This server expects version <server version> but you are on version <player version>. The game can also say You cannot connect to the server because it does not have the same version of Skyrim Together as you. Skyrim Together Reborn compares the two versions exactly: one release apart is enough to refuse the player. Your server's Console shows the same refusal as tried to connect with client <version> - Version mismatch, with the player's version in it.

How do I find out which version my server has?

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Console tab. The server must be Online.
  2. Type /version in the Type a command box and press Enter.
  3. The server answers Server and its version, for example Server v1.8.4.

The start line shows it too, for example Server v1.8.4 started on port 25570.

How does a player see their own version?

In the Skyrim Together window (F2 or Right Ctrl), the player clicks Settings. The Version section says Currently installed: and the version. It can also say Version is outdated. Please update., which means a newer release of the mod exists.

How do I fix it?

Compare the two versions, then fix the side that is behind.

The player has an older version than the server

The player updates the mod. The official update guide says to remove the old Skyrim Together Reborn mod in the mod manager first, then install the newest file from the mod's Nexus Mods page. Then the player connects again.

The player has a newer version than the server

Your server keeps the version it was installed with: it does not update itself at start. Skyrim Together Reborn released 1.8.2 on 20 September 2026, 1.8.3 on 3 October 2026 and 1.8.4 on 22 October 2026, so a server set up before a release is one version behind after it. To move the server to the newest release:

  1. Open Settings, scroll to Update and reinstall at the bottom of Game Settings, click Update and reinstall and confirm. The panel takes a backup first, listed on Backups as "Automatic - before update and reinstall", so you can go back. See How to back up and restore your Skyrim Together server.
  2. Wait a few minutes. A server that was running starts again by itself.
  3. Check the new version with /version in the Console.

Your Game Settings stay, and so does STServer.ini: the install replaces only the two program files, SkyrimTogetherServer and libSTServer.so, and writes a settings file only when none exists. Full details: How to update your Skyrim Together server.

Several players have different versions

Pick one version for the whole group, usually the newest, and bring everyone to it: the players by updating the mod, the server with Update and reinstall under Settings. The server can hold only one version at a time.

Can a Skyrim update cause this too?

A Skyrim update causes a different problem. Skyrim Together Reborn supports only the latest Skyrim Special Edition, and the panel's own help text on Game Settings warns that "a Steam update on one player's game can break the group until everyone matches again, which the server has no way to control". When Skyrim updates, players wait for the matching Skyrim Together Reborn release and install it, and the server then moves to that release too.

What if the versions match and it still fails?

Then the cause is something else. See Skyrim Together server problems and fixes and How to join your Skyrim Together server.
