How to update your Skyrim Together server

Skyrim TogetherUpdated Oct 30, 20264 min read

A Skyrim Together Reborn server on PlayNHost keeps the version it was installed with; it does not update itself at start. To update it, check the version with /version in the Console, then open Settings and click Update and reinstall at the bottom of Game Settings. The panel takes a backup first and installs the newest release. Every player then updates their mod to the same version.

How do I see which version my server runs?

  1. Open your server in the panel and click the Console tab. The server must be Online.
  2. Type /version in the Type a command box and press Enter.
  3. The server answers, for example, Server v1.8.4.

The start line shows it as well, for example Server v1.8.4 started on port 25570. Releases are listed on the mod's GitHub releases page: 1.8.2 came out on 20 September 2026, 1.8.3 on 3 October 2026 and 1.8.4 on 22 October 2026.

How do I update the server?

  1. Click Settings in the left menu. It opens on Game Settings.
  2. Scroll to the Update and reinstall card at the bottom, click Update and reinstall and confirm.
  3. The server stops, the panel takes a backup, and the install runs again with the newest Skyrim Together Reborn server. It usually takes a few minutes. A server that was running starts again by itself when it is done.
  4. Type /version in the Console and check the new version.
  5. Tell your players the new version, so they update their mod.

The backup is listed on Backups as "Automatic - before update and reinstall". See How to back up and restore your Skyrim Together server to go back. If a backup is not possible, the panel asks "Update without a backup?" and does nothing until you press Update without a backup. Only the owner and subusers with the Reinstall permission can use the button.

What stays the same after an update?

  • Game Settings stay. The panel writes them into the server at every start.
  • config/STServer.ini stays. The reinstall writes a new settings file only when there is none, so your time scale, death system, mod check and other rows keep their values.
  • Data/loadorder.txt stays, if you use the mod check.
  • Only the two program files, SkyrimTogetherServer and libSTServer.so, are replaced.

Nothing about your characters changes either: progress is in each player's own Skyrim saves, not on the server.

How do players update the mod?

The official update guide has the steps for Mod Organizer 2 and Vortex: remove the old Skyrim Together Reborn mod first, then install the newest file from the mod's Nexus Mods page. A player can check their version in the Skyrim Together window under Settings, Version.

When should I update?

When the group wants a new release, update the server and all players on the same day. Until everyone matches, players on another version are refused with This server expects version ... but you are on version ...: Players see This server expects version on your Skyrim Together server.

What about Skyrim updates?

A Skyrim update is separate from a Skyrim Together update. The panel's help text on Game Settings says "a Steam update on one player's game can break the group until everyone matches again, which the server has no way to control". Skyrim Together Reborn supports only the latest Skyrim Special Edition, so after a Skyrim update, players wait for the matching Skyrim Together Reborn release, then update the mod and the server as above.
