How to wipe or reset a colony on your RimWorld Open World server

RimWorld Open WorldUpdated Oct 30, 20264 min read

To wipe a RimWorld Open World server on PlayNHost, type wipe in the Console, then type wipe again to confirm. The server deletes every account, colony save, settlement, faction and the world, then shuts down. To reset only one player's colony, the player uses Reset Progress in the game's Esc menu; their account stays.

Wipe the whole server

  1. Take a backup on Backups first, so you can undo it: How to back up and restore your RimWorld Open World server.
  2. In the panel, click the Console tab. The server must be Online.
  3. Type wipe and press Enter. The Console warns: [WARNING] Using the wipe command will remove all player saves, accounts, factions, settlements and world data. To continue type "wipe" again.
  4. Type wipe again and press Enter. The Console prints a Wiped line for each part it deletes (Data/World.json, Players, Saves, Settlements, Factions and Data/WorldGenData), then Wipe completed, Server will now shutdown.
  5. The server stops. Click Start.
  6. Generate a new world as the first player: How to generate the world on your RimWorld Open World server.

Every player registers again after a wipe, because accounts are deleted too. Admins made with op and bans are gone with the accounts.

What does a wipe keep?

Your Game Settings, Data/Config.json, Data/Whitelist.json, Data/Difficulty.json, the three mod folders, Logs and the game's own Backups folders all stay.

Reset one player's colony (Reset Progress)

A player who wants a fresh start on the same server does this in the game:

  1. Connect to the server and log in.
  2. Press Esc and click Reset Progress.
  3. A window titled WARNING asks "This option is NOT reversible, continue?". Click YES.

The player is disconnected, and the server deletes that account's colony save and settlement. The Console prints [Deleted save data] with the username. The account, its password and its admin or ban state stay. When the player logs in again, they make a new colony.

The Open World wiki describes an older way, through Options, Mod settings, Open World and a delete button; the last mod version has Reset Progress in the Esc menu.

Reset a player's colony yourself

When a player cannot do it, for example because their colony will not load:

  1. In the Console, type inspect and the username. Note the value after Saved ID.
  2. Take a backup, then click Stop and wait for Offline.
  3. In Files, open Saves and delete the file named after the Saved ID, ending in .zipx.
  4. Open Settlements and delete the file named after the Saved ID, ending in .json.
  5. Start the server. The player logs in with the same username and password and makes a new colony.

Can I undo a wipe?

Yes, if you took a panel backup first: on Backups, choose Restore to server on it. The game's own copies under Backups also survive a wipe, so the newest Backup Date ... folder can bring the data back too. Both ways are in How to back up and restore your RimWorld Open World server.
