How to set a custom difficulty on your RimWorld Open World server

RimWorld Open WorldUpdated Oct 30, 20264 min read

To give every player on a RimWorld Open World server the same difficulty, fill in Data/Difficulty.json on the server, then turn on Use Custom Difficulty under Settings, Game Settings and restart. Give every value a number first: a new file has them all at 0, and the Open World wiki warns that anything left empty "WILL BE AT 0%".

How do the values work?

Numbers are factors: 1 means 100%, 1.5 means 150%, 0.5 means 50%. The wiki's own example: "if you set Threat Scale to 1.5 it will set it to 150%". Switches are true or false.

The file has these values:

ValueType
ThreatScalenumber
AllowBigThreats, AllowViolentQuests, AllowIntroThreats, PredatorsHuntHumanlikes, AllowExtremeWeatherIncidentstrue or false
CropYieldFactor, MineYieldFactor, ButcherYieldFactor, ResearchSpeedFactor, QuestRewardValueFactor, RaidLootPointsFactor, TradePriceFactorLoss, MaintenanceCostFactornumber
ScariaRotChance, EnemyDeathOnDownedChanceFactornumber
ColonistMoodOffset, FoodPoisonChanceFactor, ManhunterChanceOnDamageFactor, PlayerPawnInfectionChanceFactor, DiseaseIntervalFactor, DeepDrillInfestationChanceFactor, FriendlyFireChanceFactor, AllowInstantKillChancenumber
AllowTraps, AllowTurrets, AllowMortarstrue or false
AdaptationEffectFactor, AdaptationGrowthRateFactorOverZeronumber
FixedWealthModetrue or false

Most names match options on RimWorld's own custom difficulty screen, which shows them as percentages: write 150% as 1.5, 100% as 1.

Set it up

  1. In the panel, click Backups in the left menu and take a backup, so you can go back.
  2. Click the Files tab, open Data and click Difficulty.json.
  3. Give every value a number, or true or false for the switches. Keep the quotes around the names and the commas between lines.
  4. Click Save content.
  5. Click the Settings tab and, in Game Settings, turn on Use Custom Difficulty.
  6. Click Restart now.
Difficulty.json open in the file editor of a RimWorld Open World server

From then on, the server sends these values to each player when they log in. A broken file (a missing comma or quote) can stop the server from starting. Read the Console, then fix the file or restore the backup.

How do I let players pick their own difficulty again?

Turn off Use Custom Difficulty in Game Settings and click Restart now. The file stays as it is for next time.
