How to change your Space Station 14 server name and description

To change the name of a Space Station 14 server on PlayNHost, open Settings, Game Settings, type the new name in Server name, press Enter and restart. This is the name players see in the launcher and the lobby. The description in the server list and the message shown when players connect are lines in server_config.toml.

How do I change the server name?

1. Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab.
2. Click Game Settings.
3. Type the new name in Server name, up to 48 characters, and press Enter.
4. When the panel says "Saved. The server must restart before these take effect.", click Restart now.
5. Check the Console: the start prints Name: followed by your new name.

The name cannot contain a double quote (") or a backslash (\), and the panel refuses a name with either one. The field's description says either one "would break the server's config file". The panel writes the name between double quotes into the hostname line of server_config.toml. The desc and motd lines below are not checked by the panel, so be careful there: use \" if you need a quote mark.

Is Server name the same as the name on the Overview page?

No. The Server Name row on the Overview page, with its pencil icon, is the name of the server in your PlayNHost panel only. Players never see it. The name in the game comes from Server name under Settings, Game Settings. You can give both the same name.

How do I change the description in the server list?

1. Click the Files tab, then click server_config.toml.
2. Under [game], find desc = "Just another server, don't mind me!".
3. Replace the text between the quotes with your own description.
4. Click Save content, then click the arrow next to Stop and choose Restart.

How do I set a message of the day?

Under [chat] in server_config.toml, type your message between the quotes of motd = "", save and restart. The official config file says the message of the day "is displayed to players when they connect to the server."

Why did my hostname edit in the file disappear?

The hostname line is rewritten from Server name before every start, so a change typed into the file is replaced. Change Server name in Game Settings instead. The desc and motd lines are never touched by the panel.
