A Project Zomboid server that runs out of memory stops. Before you start it again, read the cards on the Overview: Memory for this server says whether the game is held below your plan (a ticket fixes it) or whether fewer heavy mods or a bigger plan is the fix.
How you know
The panel says it in up to three places, all on the Overview page:
- The card Why your server stopped, while the server is stopped (also above the output on the Console tab): "The server ran out of memory.", how much of your plan the game may use when the panel can read it, how many Workshop items the server has, and the line it read after "From the console:".
- The card Memory for this server, with the badge Ran out of memory: "The server ran out of memory on" and the date, then what to do.
- A card This server ran out of memory: "It needed more memory than its plan gives it, and the system stopped it.", with the last time and how many times in the last 7 days. Its buttons are Add more memory and See the usage.
In the Console, the game's own line is for example java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space.
What to do
While the server is still stopped, look at Memory for this server on the Overview.
- It says "The game may use only N GB of this plan's N GB, so a larger plan would not help. Open a ticket and we raise the game's limit.": click Open a ticket, then start the server again with Start. A bigger plan would not raise this limit, even where the card This server ran out of memory offers Add more memory.
- It says "Removing heavy mods helps, and a larger plan gives it more room.": go on with step 2.
- Look at your mods. Click Open Workshop on the Why your server stopped card, or open the Workshop tab, and remove the mods you do not need: How to remove a mod from your Project Zomboid server.
- Start the server again with Start.
- If it runs out again with the mods you want to keep, move to a bigger plan: See plans on the card, or My plan in the left menu (owner only).
Lose as little as possible
- How much a crash can cost depends on how often the game saves: Your Project Zomboid progress was lost after a crash or a stop.
- Keep backups: How to back up and restore your Project Zomboid world.
Good to know
- The badge Ran out of memory goes away by itself once the crash is old. Highest use, last 30 days shows how close the server came on other days.
- High memory on the Usage graph alone is not a crash. Only these cards and the Console line show that the server really ran out.
- Every reading on the card: How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need. Other reasons for a stop: How to find out why your Project Zomboid server stopped.
