A plugin or mod will not install on your Minecraft server

MinecraftUpdated Oct 28, 20266 min read

When the Modding tab will not install a plugin or mod, it says why before anything is written to your server. Most often the project is made for another server type, it needs a library that has no build for your version, or it needs a newer Java. Find the message below for its fix.

Won’t run here

The button reads Won’t run here and a line under the name says why, for example Built for fabric, and this server runs Paper.

The project is made for another server type. Plugins and mods do not cross over, and Forge and NeoForge mods do not load on each other.

  • Search for a version of the same project for your server type. Many are published for several.
  • Or change the server type: see How to change your Minecraft version or server type.
  • Tick Hide the N that cannot run here in the filters to leave these out of the list.

A plugin listed only for Paper shows Won’t run here on a Spigot server. Paper or Purpur runs it.

It cannot run here (a missing library)

A window titled with the name and cannot run here says, for example, This plugin needs <library>, and there is no build of it for paper 1.21.11. Installed as it is, it would install but never load. For a mod it ends Installed as it is, your server would not start. The library's row says no build for this server, and only Close is offered.

What it needs has not been made for your Minecraft version yet.

The author only allows downloads through CurseForge

The author of <name> only allows downloads through CurseForge, so the panel cannot install it for you. You can download it from <page> and upload it to the plugins folder in Files. (or the mods folder)

Download the file from the page in the message and upload it yourself: How to upload your own plugins or mods to your Minecraft server. The same message can name a library the project needs: This mod needs <library>. followed by the same sentence. Upload that library too.

It needs a newer Java

<name> needs Java 25, and this server runs Java 21. Installing it would stop your server starting. The message then either names the Java setting that fixes it (To use it, open Settings, set Docker image to "<setting>", restart the server, then install it again.) or says your server software cannot run on that Java.

The download failed

  • Looks like we couldn't download this plugin automatically. You should still be able to download it in your browser at <link>: download the file from that link in your browser and upload it to plugins (or mods).
  • A paid plugin cannot be downloaded by the panel. Buy it on its own site, download it there and upload it.
  • This plugin is not hosted on Hangar. Download it from <link> and upload the jar to your plugins folder.: do what it says.
  • That version is no longer available from Modrinth. Refresh the list and pick another. (or CurseForge), or CurseForge did not give a download for that version of <name>. It may have been withdrawn.: reload the page and install again, or pick another build.

No build is published for this server

No build is published for this server. The project has no build for your server type, not even an older one. Check its page with Learn more for the versions it supports.

Could not load plugins

Could not load plugins and The catalog could not be reached. Try again in a moment. A catalogue did not answer. Wait a minute and try again, or choose another Source.

The button does nothing

  • Installing needs permission to create files. Ask the owner, or see How to let a friend help run your Minecraft server.
  • After Install, the panel says <name> is being installed. It will appear under Installed once the server has it. Give it a moment, then open Installed.

It installed but does not work

The panel cannot test a plugin or mod before the server loads it. Restart the server and read the Console. If the server stops, the Why your server stopped card names the cause: see How to see why your Minecraft server stopped, A Minecraft plugin needs another plugin that is not installed and A mod is made for a different Minecraft version.

The usual steps are in How to install plugins on Paper, Spigot and Purpur and How to install mods on Forge, Fabric and NeoForge.
