A Quake Live server on PlayNHost does not need regular updates: Quake Live's most recent update on Steam is version 1069, from 7 June 2016, and every server is installed from Steam with the current files. To have the server check Steam for an update at every start, switch on Auto Update under Show advanced in Game Settings and restart.
How do I switch on Auto Update?
- Open your server in the panel and click the Settings tab.
- Under Game Settings, click Show advanced (1). The panel notes that these settings "control how the server is installed and updated rather than how it plays."
- Switch Auto Update on. Its description reads "Auto update the server on startup".
- The panel shows "Saved. The server must restart before these take effect." Click Restart now.

With Auto Update on, the server asks Steam for the newest Quake Live server files each time it starts, before Quake Live itself starts, and the Console shows Checking for game server updates.... With it off, which is how every new Quake Live server starts, the Console shows Skipping game server update check; Auto Update is set to 0. and the server starts on the files it has.
Do I need Auto Update?
Usually not. Quake Live's last announced update, Quake Live Update v1069 on 7 June 2016, said that "older servers will be de-listed from the server list". Your server is installed with the current files, so it is not one of those older servers. Turn Auto Update on if Steam ever ships a new Quake Live update and your server should follow it.
What about Workshop items?
Workshop items are separate from game updates. Quake Live downloads the items in your list at every start, whatever Auto Update says: How to add Steam Workshop items to your Quake Live server.
Questions people ask
Does the panel update my server by itself? No. With Auto Update off, nothing changes the game files. With it on, only a start or restart checks Steam. To restart at a set time, use a schedule: How to restart your Quake Live server on a schedule.
Is there a beta or older version to choose? No. A Quake Live server has one server type and no version choice in the panel.
