On the Installed list of the Modding tab, open a plugin's or mod's menu and choose Edit its settings. The panel lists that plugin's or mod's config files and opens them in the same settings editor as the Settings tab, one setting per line, with its allowed values. Change what you need and click Save & restart.
Open the settings
- Open your server in the panel, click the Modding tab, then Plugins or Mods, then Installed.
- Open the menu at the end of the row (the three dots, Options for the name) and choose Edit its settings.
- The window Settings for and the name lists the files it found. Click Open beside one.
- Change the settings. The search box finds a setting by name, and a number outside the range the file allows is refused with
This value is outside the range the file allows. - Click Save & restart, or Save only to apply the change at the next start. Revert throws away what you changed. Back to the files returns to the list.
For a plugin, Save & restart stops the server first, writes your change while it is stopped, then starts it again: Your change is written while it is stopped, then it starts again, so the plugin cannot save over it. Many plugins write their file again when the server stops, so a change saved while the server runs can be lost. Save only writes it at once, so for a plugin, use Save & restart.
Which files it shows
- Plugins: the plugin's main file,
config.yml(orconfig.toml) in its own folder insideplugins, for exampleplugins/Essentials/config.yml. - Mods: the TOML and YAML files in the
configfolder, plusdefaultconfigs, markedUsed for new worlds only, and the world'sserverconfigfolder, markedThis world's copy, which wins over config/.
If the panel cannot tell which files belong to that plugin or mod, it says The panel could not tell which of these belong to <name>, so every config file on this tab is listed. Pick the right one by its folder name.
If it says No config file yet, the plugin or mod has not written one. Start the server once with it installed, then look again.
Files the window does not list
Other files, such as a plugin's messages.yml, a kits or warps file, or a mod's .json config, are edited in Files:
- Stop the server, so the plugin cannot write over your change while it stops.
- Click the Files tab and open the plugin's folder in
plugins, or theconfigfolder for a mod. - Open the file, edit it and save. Keep the file's format exactly: indentation in YAML, quotes and commas in JSON.
- Start the server.
See How to upload, edit and manage your server files. Copy the file, or take a backup, before a big change.
The server's own settings files
server.properties, bukkit.yml, spigot.yml, Paper's and Purpur's files, and a proxy's settings are on the Settings tab, not here. See Minecraft server properties explained and How to change your server settings.
If the server does not start after an edit
A typing mistake in a settings file stops some plugins and mods from loading. Open the Console and look for the file's name, or check the Why your server stopped card on Overview. Put the old value back, or restore the copy you made. See How to see why your Minecraft server stopped.
Good to know
- You need permission to read and change files.
- A restart is the safe way to apply a change. If a plugin offers a reload command, its own documentation says what that command reloads.
- Plugin permissions are not in these files: see How to set up ranks and permissions with LuckPerms on your Minecraft server.
