How to add more worlds with Multiverse on your Minecraft server

MinecraftUpdated Oct 28, 20264 min read

Multiverse-Core runs several worlds on one server at the same time, such as survival, creative and a minigame world. Install it from Modding, Plugins and restart, then type /mv create creative normal to make a world and /mv tp creative to go there.

The commands below are from Multiverse's official documentation (version 5). The panel's Worlds tab switches which single world your server loads; Multiverse adds more worlds on top of it.

Install Multiverse-Core

  1. Open your server in the panel, click the Modding tab, then Plugins.
  2. Search for Multiverse-Core and click Install on its row.
  3. Restart the server. Multiverse writes its settings on the first start.

Multiverse-Core is published for Paper, Purpur and Spigot. Its add-ons (Multiverse-Inventories, Multiverse-Portals, Multiverse-NetherPortals) are separate plugins; Multiverse's guide says all its parts must be on the same major version.

Create a world

/mv create <name> <environment>, where the environment is normal, nether or the_end. For example:

  • /mv create creative normal
  • /mv create mining normal --seed 12345 with a seed of your choice.
  • --world-type picks the world type, for example a flat world.

Visit and manage worlds

  • /mv list lists the worlds.
  • /mv tp creative takes you there; /mv tp Steve creative sends Steve.
  • /mv setspawn sets the world's spawn where you stand; /mv spawn takes you to it.
  • /mv info creative shows a world's settings, and /mv modify changes them.

Bring in an existing world

  1. Upload the world folder to the main folder of your server in Files, or with SFTP for a large world. See How to upload, edit and manage your server files. Do not use Import a world on the Worlds tab for this: it makes the world the one your server loads.
  2. Type /mv import <name> <environment>, for example /mv import oldworld normal, with the folder's name.

Multiverse's documentation adds that on Paper 26.1 and newer, worlds are named with a namespaced key, and the folder layout differs from Spigot and older Paper. Read its "Creating worlds with a namespaced key" section if your server is on 26.1 or newer.

Remove or delete a world

  • /mv remove creative takes the world out of Multiverse but keeps its folder.
  • /mv delete creative deletes the world and its folder for good. Multiverse asks you to confirm with /mv confirm and a code within 30 seconds.

Take a backup before you delete a world. See How to create, download and restore backups.
