How many players can a Day of Defeat: Source server have?

Day of Defeat: SourceUpdated Oct 30, 20263 min read

Day of Defeat: Source plans on PlayNHost come with 12, 24 or 32 player slots. Your plan's number is the most slots you can set, and the server holds as many players as its Slots on Overview says. You can change that number up to your plan's limit with Edit Player Slots.

How many players does each plan allow?

Plan sizePlayer slotsMemory
Smallest122 GB
Middle244 GB
Largest328 GB

The slot count your server runs with is Max Players under Game Settings, marked Read only. The panel sends it to the game at every start as its player limit (-maxplayers), so the server never holds more players than that. If it shows fewer than your plan's number, raise it with Edit Player Slots.

Can I change the number of slots?

Yes, down to 1 and back up to your plan's number. Click the pencil next to Slots on the Overview server card, or Edit slots on the Active players card, and click Update. The server restarts to apply it. Steps: How to change player slots on your Day of Defeat: Source server.

How do I see who is online?

The Active players card on Overview lists the players on the server and how long they have been connected. When nobody is on it says Nobody is online. The panel asks the game itself for this list, on the server's own port.

In the Console, status lists the same players with their userid and SteamID: How to use the Console and RCON on your Day of Defeat: Source server.

Can bots fill the empty slots?

Not with the game alone. The Valve Developer Community says Day of Defeat: Source "does not have proper built-in bot support": its bot commands are for debugging, and those bots only run around. It names RCBot2, a Metamod plugin, for proper bots. We have not tested RCBot2 on our servers.

Do all players need their own copy of the game?

Yes. Day of Defeat: Source is a paid game on Steam for Windows and Linux, and every player needs their own copy. To bring your group in: How to invite friends to your Day of Defeat: Source server.
